Power To Be’s belief that ‘everyone belongs in nature’ is a core component of everything that we do, and every decision that we make as an organization. We understand that encouraging and supporting others to get outside and into nature can have an impact on our environment, and as such, we wish to mitigate our environmental and ecological footprint as best we can. We are proud to be taking sustainability action in our community by being a part of the One Planet Saanich initiative.
This initiative brings together municipalities, organizations, businesses, schools and community groups throughout Saanich, and various other cities around the world. As a social sector change leader, Power To Be strives for authentic action, and the One Planet Action Plan framework provides a solid grounding in setting ambitious sustainability objectives and stretch goals throughout our organization. We are committed to real action, both internally and within our community.
This framework takes a holistic approach, providing 10 principles (petals) that cover all aspects of social, environmental, and economic sustainability. They provide guidance on setting organizational goals, supporting action, and driving change towards building healthier and more sustainable communities.
We are enhancing our programs by further developing environmental stewardship and education curriculum for our participants, creating a culture of responsible travel practices for our staff, procuring local and sustainable food and products where possible, and monitoring the biodiversity and watershed health at Prospect Lake. We are also working conscientiously to improve and balance the natural and built environments of our Prospect Lake site – our new building project is designed with environmentally-minded materials, and decisions will be based on the lifespan of materials utilized while keeping longevity and safety in mind.
