Power To Be began in 1998 with an idea: help people living with a disability or barrier access nature. The idea grew into a community, connecting participants to adventures and supporters to opportunities, collectively redefining our definition of ability.

Based in Victoria and Vancouver, we are a non-profit organization that believes everyone belongs in nature. We believe finances shouldn’t prevent anyone from accessing nature, and we work to remove cognitive, physical and social barriers to the outdoors, supporting participants to explore who they are and what they are capable of with the support of our staff, volunteers and each other.

Our Mission

From hiking and kayaking, to camping and snowshoeing, we create access to nature for youth, families and adults living with cognitive, physical, financial, and social barriers. Our life-changing programs redefine courage, hope, inclusion, and ability.

Our mission is delivered by a team of committed, caring, and skilled staff and volunteers.

Our Vision

There are invaluable benefits to nature-based activities for us all. On top of providing recreation, community, and a healthy lifestyle; spending time in nature fuels the body, guides the heart, and mends the soul. We believe access to nature is a fundamental right. We believe everyone belongs in nature.

Our Values

Community: We share experiences with others, build long-term connections and support collective learning.

Diversity & Inclusion: We strive to provide a sense of belonging for everyone, with equal access to opportunities and resources.

Nature: We respect the natural world and the positive role it plays in people’s growth, healing and wellbeing.

Imagination: We believe the pursuit of adventure, learning, and play will inspire people to discover limitless opportunities.

Service: We believe our work fosters authentic relationships rooted in trust, respect, and purpose.

Gratitude: We believe gratitude is at the heart of our ability to achieve our mission and to elevate the impact on our community.

Why We Do It

We believe that physical activity and time outdoors is paramount to health and happiness. Without nature, we miss out on some of life’s most wonderful and transformative experiences and opportunities to broaden personal horizons. We exist today because, without Power To Be, people living with a barrier would be less likely to regain their nature literacy and be inspired to live meaningful lives.
