“We are so proud of our participants and for how far they have come,” said Program Manager Aviva Shtull. “This celebration is an opportunity to share with the community just how amazing they are.”
Power To Be celebrated the journey of 28 youth at various stages of their Wilderness School adventures. For nine of the youth, the evening marked the end of their three-year journey of learning and self-discovery. Shaheen and Sadie shared stories of evolution, friendship, and growth. They recounted the transformation of the group – once isolated and introverted individuals that blossomed into a dynamic and life-long family.
Shaheen’s mom, Holly, left the grads with an encouraging and fitting quote from the film Jack. She said, “Please, don’t worry so much. Because in the end, none of us have very long on this Earth. Life is fleeting. And if you’re ever distressed, cast your eyes to the summer sky when the stars are strung across the velvety night. And when a shooting star streaks through the blackness, turning night into day… make a wish and think of Power to Be. Make your life spectacular.”
The gift of a backpack, generously provided by Robinson’s Outdoor Store, was given to the graduating youth to symbolize the memories, skills, and relationships they will carry with them as they take on new and exciting adventures. In addition to sporting their new gear on stage, the youth shared advice to first and second year participants. A vital tip highly endorsed by all grads: always pack plenty of socks.
Thank you to the staff, participants, parents, volunteers, and sponsors who all worked together to make this evening special. Congratulations to all the Wilderness School youth, we couldn’t be prouder.
