Tell me more about this program!

A 5-day Adaptive Training program for individuals who live with an identified barrier or disability who would like to learn outdoor facilitation skills as well as approaches to supporting people with diverse needs to access outdoor recreation. This program is in partnership with Outward Bound Canada Training Academy and is following curriculum designed in their Training Academy, specifically their Foundations Program.

Power To Be has partnered with Outward Bound Canada Training Academy and adapted the curriculum to support diverse needs, learning styles, and abilities. There will be a focus on kayaking skills, hiking skills, and outdoor facilitation skills. There is also a 1-day online module that will focus on Inclusive Approaches to Outdoor facilitation. It is required that the online course be completed before attending the in-person session.

Who can participate in the program?

Members of underrepresented communities, or those who have barriers to accessing outdoor facilitation-type training.

  • Ages 18+ (no upper age limit).
  • An interest (or curiosity) in exploring outdoor leadership as a possible career path or to augment current work with outdoor competencies (i.e. teacher or counsellor who wants to bring outdoor activities into their practice).
  • Participants must enjoy the outdoors, physical activity, and being outside doing physical things for 6 hours a day.
  • Must be able to commit to the 4 days of the in-person training.
Where will the program take place?

Four of the five days will take place at Power To Be’s beautiful home on Prospect Lake in Victoria. There will be a shuttle available from the hotel that the group will be staying at. The fifth day is online, and will be completed before participants attend the in-person sessions.
